Devil’s Claw has high concentrations of a chemical compound called, harpogoside, which reduces inflammation in the joints. Other active constituents have analgesic properties. It also contains polyphenols and flavonoids, which are antioxidants.

Devil’s Claw has a long history of use as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent. It has been effective on symptoms of arthritis, muscle pain, improving digestion and rheumatic pain. In horses, it has been found beneficial for degenerative disorders, inflammation, pain due to arthritis and muscle pain. This can be a natural alternative to phenylbutazone and cortisone, with similar actions, and without adverse side effects.
